Oat protein nanofibrils carry ultrasmall iron in a human absorption study

Researchers combined oat-protein nanofibrils with iron and tested absorption using stable isotopes in a cross-over trial.

Evidence summary

In 52 young iron-deficient women, the reported fractional absorption for one reduced hybrid was 1.76-fold higher with water and 1.65-fold higher with polyphenol-rich food than ferrous sulfate under the tested conditions.

This study crossed from material design into a human absorption measurement

The important evidence chain is not simply “smaller iron.” Oat protein nanofibrils bound and stabilized iron, the formulation was characterized, and absorption was then measured with stable isotopes in a defined participant group.

What this study does not establish

  • The trial population and formulations were specific.
  • Absorption, long-term health outcome and population-scale effectiveness are different questions.
  • Regulatory review and sensory performance remain formulation- and market-specific.
