What is nanotechnology?

Explore the 1–100 nm range through an interactive logarithmic scale from atoms and molecules to cells, hair and everyday objects.

Engineering matter where dimensions change the question

Nanotechnology is the understanding and control of matter at dimensions of roughly 1 to 100 nanometres, where size-dependent phenomena can enable new behavior and applications.

A nanometre is one billionth of a metre. The label describes a scale and a way of investigating matter—it does not identify one material, one industry, or one level of risk.

  • Structure, surface area, confinement and interfaces can become decisive.
  • A material is not automatically “better” because it is nanoscale.
  • Measurements, environment and intended use determine what a result means.
